Converting diapers to yarn

I finally got a visit to the friend who's been receiving all these diapers I've been making. I brought along a pair of sweater shorties, with felted on decorations.



I took nearly a dozen diapers in two sizes, with doublers, plus some shorties/longies.



Here are some of the details on the cutest diapers:



My friend gave me a generous gift certificate for my birthday. It was good at the local yarn shop, which meant I had to spend it immediately, or never spend it. I willingly ran off to spend! I got my first skein of Malabrigo, plus some Earth Collection Homestead in natural colours, and 2 skeins of Mirasol Hacho sock yarn.

Purple Skirty--Finished Object!

Okay, so my last several posts have been about the baby skirt in progress. I finally got a design that worked, that I'm really happy with. For the skirt, I cast on using a magic cast on, leaving live stitches on a circular needle while I knitted the skirt top-down.



When the skirt was complete, I knitted it together with the panty and knitted a unified waist band.



Now, blocked and ready to go, I think it's adorable! It was knitted on size 8 needles, using Cascade 220 Quatro and Nature Spun Worsted.



Yesterday, I was in a thrift store, looking for things to cut up, as usual. I perused the baby aisle, checking to see if I could find a matching shirt, one that wouldn't be TOO MUCH PURPLE, not TOO MUCH FRILLY, and not DORA THE EXPLORA or any other commercialised kinda thing. I believe I found the very perfectest shirt!

I haven't shipped out the volcano pants yet, as I wanted to send a few more things with the pants.

I think I have about 8 more cloth diapers ready to go. Here's a picture of a favourite:



As is customary, I cut up some old shirts to make cute recycled diapers. A couple of the shirts had plenty of fabric left over, but not enough to make more diapers.



So I cut up the scraps and had some sewing fun.

Fishing for compliments

Me: Your sister's not here to admire the diapers so I need you to do that for me.
TeenBoy: Uhm. I'm not much of a judge of diapers.
Me: A simple, "Mom, those are really cute" will do.
TeenBoy:Mom, those are really cute.
Me: (can't leave well enough alone) They're the colours of your old school uniform. Isn't that cool, baby going pee and poo on your old uniform?
TeenBoy: Urgh.

Stuff for baby

Let me reiterate. I am not expecting. The crafting for babies, though, is going strong. I'm making blazing progress on a cute pair of longies. They are made with the Itchy Fingers Longies Pattern, found on Ravelry. I'm using Cascade Quatro and Elizabeth Austen Andes. Wow, did that leg ruffle turn out a enthusiastic or what?



I finished the soaker from the Warm Heart Woolies Trim Soaker Pattern, also found on Ravelry. This is made with Cascade 220 Wool.



I made more newborn sized diapers out of recycled shirts and hemp/cotton scraps.



A favourite in this batch is another made from one of my daughter's shirts, with the extra layers coming from a different recycled t-shirt.

This is not mitten #2 either

I finished mitten #1 and got thoroughly distracted.

My daughter and I entered the Sewing Room of Doom to make a few diapers. We made ten.



Three of them are designated for a friend who had a baby a few weeks ago. Since she had a girl, she gets the pink stripey one, the green flowery one, and one of the two newborn sized ones. The rest are for a friend who's due next month.

The stripey one and the tie-dye one are both made from shirts my daughter used to wear. She was having fun picking out fabrics. Suddenly she disappeared, and returned a few minutes later with some too-small shirts, saying, "These are 100% cotton, will they do?"

Our collective favourite is the stripey one. So cute! It also comes with two matching wipe cloths, and is lined with bright pink sherpa.






Another favourite is the hemp diaper. On this diaper, she realised that first, the snaps didn't all have to match. Then she realised that even the snap fronts and backs don't have to match.
